What to Expect at Your First Psychology Appointment

Calm, welcoming therapy room with a soft grey couch, ready for a first Psychology appointment

Booking your first Psychology appointment can feel like a big step. It’s common to think about it for a long time before picking up the phone. So if you’re feeling nervous, you’re in good company.

Knowing what happens can make the whole experience feel more manageable. This guide walks you through what usually happens in a first session at our Milperra, Oran Park and Narellan clinics, so you know what to expect when you walk through the door.

What Happens in the First Session

Most sessions run for about 50 minutes. The first one is mainly about getting to know you.

Talking about what brought you in

Your Psychologist will usually start by asking what led you to book. For example, you might talk about how you’ve been feeling, what’s been happening lately, or a situation that’s been weighing on you.

There’s no right or wrong way to explain it. Some people arrive with a clear list, while others simply know that something doesn’t feel right. Both are completely okay.

Background questions

Next, your Psychologist may ask about different parts of your life. This could include your sleep, work or study, relationships, health and family background. These questions help them understand the bigger picture.

That said, you’re always in control of what you share. If a topic feels too hard to talk about yet, you can say so. Your Psychologist will respect your pace.

Confidentiality

Early on, your Psychologist will explain how your information is kept confidential. They’ll also explain the few situations where information may need to be shared, such as when someone’s safety is at risk. If anything is unclear, it’s always worth asking.

Setting goals together

Towards the end of the session, you and your Psychologist will usually talk about what you’d like to get out of therapy. From there, they may suggest a plan using evidence-based approaches suited to your needs. You’ll also discuss how often sessions might be helpful.

How You Might Feel Afterwards

It’s common to feel a mix of emotions after a first session. Some people feel lighter after finally talking things through. Others feel tired or emotional, particularly if they’ve discussed something difficult.

These reactions are normal. Therefore, it can help to plan something gentle for afterwards, like a walk or a cup of tea somewhere calm.

What If It Doesn’t Feel Like the Right Fit?

Feeling comfortable with your Psychologist matters. In fact, the relationship between patient and Psychologist is widely recognised as an important part of therapy.

If something doesn’t feel right after a session or two, please let us know. With a range of clinicians across three locations, we can often help you find someone who may suit you better. You won’t need to start the search again on your own.

Seeing Us in Person or via Telehealth

RWPsychology has clinics in Milperra, Oran Park and Narellan, with a range of early morning, daytime and after-hours appointments. Additionally, Telehealth appointments are available for patients anywhere in NSW, and a first session via Telehealth follows the same steps.

For Telehealth, you’ll just need a private space, a device with a camera and a reliable internet connection.
