Patient Referrals

Why Refer to RWPsychology?

At RWPsychology, we are proud of the work we do in the South West Sydney community. Our team is known for compassion, dedication, and a genuine commitment to the families we serve. Rather than settling for average, we consistently strive for excellence in everything we do.

When you refer a patient to RWPsychology, you are connecting them with a broad and diverse team of skilled clinicians. Our practice brings together two groups of professionals. The first is our employed psychology team, who work directly under the clinical leadership of Director and Principal Psychologist Renata Wosik. The second is our group of experienced Clinical Business Associates, independent registered psychologists who share our locations and our values.

As a result of this model, referring GPs gain access to a significantly wider scope of clinical skills, therapeutic approaches and specialist areas than a single-clinician practice can offer. Whether your patient needs support for anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders, ADHD, autism, relationship difficulties, Workcover, or something else entirely, we are well placed to match them with the right clinician for their needs. In addition, our team works collaboratively, meaning your patients benefit from a connected and supportive practice environment throughout their care.

We understand how important it is for referring GPs to feel confident that their patients are in good hands. That is exactly what we aim to deliver, every time.

What We Provide Our Referring Doctors:

How to Refer a Patient:

Referring to RWPsychology is straightforward. In fact, patients do not need a referral to book an appointment. However, a valid Mental Health Care Plan from their GP allows patients to access Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year in lots of 6 sessions per referral. GPs can provide a referral by writing a Mental Health Care Plan for the patient and sending us a copy of the referral letter.

Important Medicare Information:

Under MBS explanatory note AN.15.6, effective 1 November 2025, all referrals for Better Access psychology services must meet the following requirements:

  • The referral must be in writing.
  • It must be signed and dated by the referring practitioner (electronic signature is acceptable)
  • The patient’s full name and date of birth.
  • The date the referral was written.
  • The name, address and provider number of the referring practitioner.
  • The type of allied health professional being referred to, in this case a psychologist.
  • The number of sessions being referred for in the initial course of treatment, which is up to 6 sessions.
  • A statement confirming the patient has a clinically diagnosed mental disorder requiring at least moderate support.
  • A statement confirming whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan or Psychiatrist Assessment and Management Plan has been prepared.

There are also a few important points to note. The Mental Health Treatment Plan itself is not considered a referral. GPs must provide a separate referral document. The patient does not need to bring the referral to the GP practice where the MHTP was prepared. However, the referral must come from either the GP at the patient’s MyMedicare registered practice or their usual medical practitioner.

Patients retain the right to choose their own psychologist. Therefore, GPs do not need to include the name or address of the treating psychologist or practice on the referral.

As per Medicare requirement, RWPsychology will send a written clinical report at the completion of each course of treatment. This report will include a summary of treatment provided, the patient’s progress, and recommendations for ongoing management.
