What are Mood Disorders?
Mood disorders are a group of mental health conditions that significantly affect how a person feels day to day. While everyone experiences shifts in mood from time to time, mood disorders involve persistent changes that interfere with daily life, relationships and the ability to function at work or at home.
The most common mood disorders include depression, bipolar disorder, cyclothymia and dysthymia. Each condition presents differently, and each person’s experience is unique. However, with the right support, mood disorders can be effectively managed.
Signs You May Be Experiencing Mood Disorders
Mood disorders can look different from person to person. Some common signs include persistent low mood or sadness, episodes of unusually elevated or irritable mood, changes in sleep, appetite or energy levels, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, withdrawal from relationships and activities you previously enjoyed, and feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.
If you recognise these patterns in yourself or someone you care about, speaking with a psychologist is a good first step.
How Psychology Can Help
Psychologists use evidence-based approaches to support people living with mood disorders. For instance, treatment may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) or other evidence based approaches. These approaches can help identify and change unhelpful thought patterns, and behavioural strategies in addition can support daily functioning and emotional regulation.
Your psychologist will work with you to understand your individual experience and develop a treatment plan suited to your needs.
