Medicare Rebates

Medicare rebates apply when your GP refers you with a valid Mental Health Care Plan. You can access up to 10 sessions per calendar year, issued in lots of 6 sessions at a time.

We process your Medicare rebate directly in the office, making the claiming process as simple as possible for you. Please note that due to Medicare requirements, we collect full payment at the time of your appointment. We then process your rebate back to you through Medicare on the same day.

Therefore, rather than paying only the gap amount, you pay the full fee upfront and Medicare returns the rebate to your nominated bank account, usually within 24 to 48 hours.

For further information about the Better Access Initiative, visit the official Medicare fact sheet here: https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/2025-10/better-access-fact-sheet-patients_0.pdf

At present Medicare do not allow rebates for couple sessions. If, however a patient is diagnosed by their GP with a mental health diagnosis and placed on a mental health careplan, rebates may be possible if couple sessions are deemed appropriate to restore the individual’s mental health concern. An initial consultation with the referred patient will be required to determine the suitability and validity of the requested sessions under the Medicare scheme to ensure compliance with their stringent rules. It should be noted that some Private Health Funds may provide rebates for couple therapy.
