PTSD Psychology Support

Very frightening or distressing events may result in trauma.

RWPsychology offer professional psychological trauma counseling to children, adolescents and adults who need support after a traumatic event.

Everyone’s reaction to traumatic experiences is different. Some people recover well with the help of family and friends and do not experience long-term problems. Some people experience problems directly after the traumatic event or even much later.

Traumatic events are usually experiences which are life threatening or pose a significant threat to a person’s physical or psychological wellbeing.

An event may have little impact on one person but cause severe distress in another. A person’s mental and physical health, available support at the time of the event or their past experience and coping skills can influence how they respond to a traumatic event.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after a traumatic event.

Without treatment, PTSD can become a chronic condition, and places the individual at greater risk of developing other mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety, or problems with alcohol or drug use.

Symptoms of PTSD include:

  • reliving the traumatic event
  • being on-edge or extremely wound up (flight-or-fight response)
  • avoiding reminders or memories of the traumatic event
  • feeling numb emotionally.

Causes of PTSD

PTSD can be caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as:

  • life-threatening situations
  • major stress in your life
  • a serious accident (e.g. a car accident)
  • physical or sexual assault
  • war
  • terrorism
  • natural disasters.
